Job Search / Skills Required

I've collected a few job vacancies to give me a better overview of what skills and programs possible employers would be expecting someone of my desired position to know and have adequate experience in.I've colour coded the minimum and extra requirements of the job advert based on my personal experience with each of them. This will help me understand what areas of my chosen topic to focus on and where I need to improve or learn new skills.

Key :
  • Green – Feel confident that I fulfill these requirements
  • Yellow – Things I have a little knowledge on but need to gain more experience in
  • Red – Requirements I have little to no experience in.
Job Search Analysis

After breaking down the requirements it was clear that there we're many aspects of environment artists I had little to no knowledge in and doing this should help me greatly in pinpointing not only what I needed to improve on & learn from scratch but what the marking criteria should be.

http://arlab.com/doc/_media/images/products/3d_engine/exporters/3ds_max/advanced/01_normal_map_comparison.jpgGeneral knowledge of 3D modelling & sculpting software was the most mentioned, as well as having industry experience. Neither of these requirements were to surprising but the mention of scultping software such as Z-Brush and Mudbox is something I only have minimal experience in. My assumption is that they intend on looking for modellers that can sculpting assets in highpoly form and bake them down to low poly assets and/or textures which isn't something I was intending on doing but may be able to add this to my dissertation once I've planned out the project fully later on.

http://www.allegorithmic.com/sites/default/files/UE4Logo.pngknowledge of game engines is another requirement that was mentioned throughout the job search, mainly Unity & Unreal which are the two engines we've primarily been using for the last 2 years for our own projects. I was already intending on using the newest version on Unreal engine (UE4) as its the most up-to date engine and is currently leading development for AAA games on multiple platforms. Having a decent amount of knowledge with this engine should prove to be valuable when I start looking for jobs as an environment artist.

Texturing skills is another common requirement, whether it be texturing in Photoshop or realtime texturing in a program such as Mudbox or 3DCoat. UV unwrapping goes hand in hand with texturing knowledge aswell as understanding how shapes and silhouettes work in 3D space for baking high to low poly assets.

Only one of the vacancies had modular architecture experience as a requirement, the job is for a dungeon crawler game which is a genre of game that has a long history of using this method of asset and level design. This has given me the idea to look at more dungeon crawl games and try to deconstruct the design choices they've made.
